Hearing myself with the others - Sound levels in choral performance measu
نویسنده
چکیده
The choir singer has two acoustic sipals to attend to: fhe sound of his or her own voice (feedback), and the sound of fhe rest of fhe choir (reference). The balance in loudness between feedback and reference is governed mainly by the room acousfics. While earlier experimenfs have shown fhat singers have a fairly large tolerance for imbalance, wifh references ranging from -23 dB to +5 dB, experience suggests tha f , when singers are given control over this parameter, their preferences are much narrower. A quantification of the optimum balance would be useful in fhe desip of concert stages and rehearsal halls. A method is described for measuring the feedback and reference levels as experienced by singers under live performance conditions. Recordings were made using binaural microphones worn by choir singer subjects. With the given combination of choir and room, it was possible to achieve adequate separation of the feedback and reference sipals with simple signal processing. The feedback-to-reference ra fio averaged over the N v e singers was found to be +3.9 dB, with extremes of +1.5and +7.3 dB.

Relationship between Sound Pressure Levels and the Risk of Hearing Loss using Personal Protective Equipment in Manufacturing Industries
Introduction: The sound pressure levels caused by work environment noise, along with the effects and ways of reducing it, are one of the most important issues in the manufacturing industry. Noise is the most common pollutant in the industrial environment, which can cause many disorders in various organs of the body, such as the auditory and vascular systems. This study aimed to investigate the ...
متن کاملHearing Dose and Perceptions of Hearing and Singing Effort Among University Choir Singers in Varied Rehearsal and Performance Settings
This collective case study documented university choral students’ (N = 4) hearing doses, acquired through Etymotic Personal Noise Dosimeters (ER200D), as they rehearsed and performed a program of opera choruses during five time periods in three venues. Acquisition periods included one choir only rehearsal, two choir-orchestra-soloist rehearsals, and two public performances with choirorchestra-s...
متن کاملSelect Acoustic and Perceptual Measures of Choral Formation
The purposes of this study were (1) to acoustically compare three contrasting choral formations (block sectional, mixed, and sectional in columns) in performance of two contrasting pieces of choral literature (homophonic and polyphonic) by a university graduate choir (N=30), and (2) to compare singers’ perceptions of and preferences for the contrasting choral formations across vocal part and ge...

متن کاملRole of handedness in the Effects of Low Frequency Noise on cognitive performance of Students of Hamedan University of Medical Sciences.
Background and Aim: Noise is one of the most effective exogenous factors affecting the processing mechanisms of the human brain, which has a major role in the occurrence of human error and occupational accidents. Low frequency noise is usually produced by sources such as ventilation systems, pumps, compressors, diesel engines and gas turbines, and so on. For this reason, the sound is in additio...
